Hayward Field Scoreboard, UofO

In anticipation of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials held at the newly redesigned Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, Firm 151 was commissioned to develop a concept for a cutting-edge new scoreboard. The design builds upon the history of athletic scoreboards, while also pushing the boundaries of what functions a scoreboard can have. Besides framing two large LED displays, the structure is an organic loop that follows the curvature of the field, providing an overhead canopy for the Powell Plaza entrance.

Centered on the north end of the field, the scoreboard is positioned and sized to optimize stadium site-lines and wind conditions for track events. Clad in black vertical metal ribs, the structure floats on two large column masses, cantilevering over the northeast entry gates. The design was intended to not only be a canvas for displays, but also a sculptural monument welcoming fans into the new stadium.
