Athletic Medicine Center, UofO

Occupying 15,000 square feet within the University of Oregon’s Casanova Center, the Athletic Medicine Center is a sports therapy and training facility for student-athletes. Its innovative features include ample space for treadmills and exercise bikes; three hydro-therapy tubs; hot and cold tubs; massage and taping tables; medical examination rooms; meeting rooms; and a nutrition bar, pharmacy, student lounge, and Bod Pod® capsule for calculating body fat.

The seating area is divided into sections by a zigzagging bench, conceived as an unraveling string of tape, serving as the binding element, and providing intimate areas for conversation. The lounge is backed by a wall of floor-to-ceiling white oak planks of varying widths. The design is intended to symbolize one large sinuous muscle.

A glass vessel expansion provides the hydro and physical therapy spaces with natural light that filters through wooden slats. The resulting moiré of sunlight across the pools brings visual and textural warmth to the space.
